INDIANAPOLIS — Senior Ryan Smith and freshman Lindon McDonald of the Goshen College men's track and field team concluded their 2017 seasons by picking up all-Crossroads League honors at the conference meet last weekend, the conference announced Friday.

McDonald, a Westview High School graduate from Topeka, Indiana, was one of three people to clear the 1.98-meter (6-foot-6) bar at the seventh height of the men's high jump. None of the jumpers claimed the title outright at 2.01 meters (6-foot-7), so the final placing reverted to a tiebreaker based on number of attempts required and McDonald was credited with third place.

McDonald finishes his first collegiate season with a personal best of 6-6, something he achieved in both of his last two meets. He placed second at the CL's indoor invitational in February with a 6-5 leap, but no all-conference awards are given in indoor track.

Smith earned his seventh and eighth career all-conference honors, taking first place in the 10,000 meters and third place in the 5,000 meters. The Central Noble High School graduate had previously been all-conference in all four seasons of his cross country career, as well as the 10,000 meters in each of the last two outdoor track seasons, but 2017 marked the first time he was all-league in the 5,000 or in multiple events at the same meet.

Smith will conclude his career with Goshen's school records in the outdoor 5,000 (14:50.51) and 10,000 (30:38.99), although neither mark was set at his final conference meet: last weekend, he finished the 5K in 15:08.02 and the 10K in 32:07.62.

A 13-time national qualifier between indoor track, outdoor track and cross country, Smith has reached the qualification standards for three events at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship, set for May 25-27 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

As of Friday, May 12, he would be the 15th seed at nationals in the 5,000 meters, the fifth seed in the 10,000 meters and the second or third seed in the marathon; however, since all three of those events draw from a similar pool of distance runners and completing all three of them would entail running more than 35 miles in a 48-hour period, the entry list at nationals will likely change from the figures given above.

In addition to Smith, the Maple Leafs have three other athletes set to compete in Gulf Shores: senior Isaiah Friesen has qualified in the men's marathon, while freshman Siana Emery and junior Sawyer Biddle are seeded 11th and 13th, respectively, in the women's and men's 5,000-meter race walk.

The Crossroads League selects all-conference teams annually in each of the league's 15 sponsored sports. In each sport, the awards are determined either by a vote of the league's coaches or by performance at the conference meet.
