INDIANAPOLIS — Goshen College men's basketball player Xavier Newson capped his senior season with all-Crossroads League honorable mention, the conference announced Thursday.

Newson led the Maple Leafs in scoring with 14.6 points per game while playing in all 30 games. In his lone season at Goshen after transferring from Missouri Western State University, he scored in double figures 26 times and reached 20 points on eight occasions.

His season high came on Dec. 19, when he scored 25 points in a win over IU Kokomo. In the 18-game Crossroads League season, Newson averaged 15.3 points per game with a high of 23 points at Bethel on Dec. 7.

Newson also finished second on the team with 5.1 rebounds per game and third with 40 three-point baskets. He shot 48 percent from the floor, 35 percent from 3-point range and 77 percent at the foul line while playing a team-high 31.5 minutes per game.

In conference play, he played 32.5 minutes a game and scored 275 points, 60 more than his closest competition on the team. His per-game total ranked seventh in the conference and he finished in the top 13 in both field-goal and free-throw percentage. His team-high four double-doubles was more than all but seven CL players.

The Maple Leafs finished 10-20 in the 2016-17 season with a 3-15 conference mark. Among the 13 players on the Goshen roster, 11 have remaining eligibility for the 2017-18 season, which will start in late October or early November with a schedule announced in August.
