MARION, Ind. — Chelsea Foster ran Goshen College's fastest time of the season to lead the Maple Leafs to an eighth-place finish in the Crossroads League women's cross country meet held Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan University.

The freshman finished the five-kilometer (3.11-mile) on-campus course in 19 minutes, 38.7 seconds, claiming 26th place and knocking 12.4 seconds off her previous career best set 29 days ago. She came within 11 places and 27.8 seconds of all-Crossroads League honors, something no GC runner has done since 2008. The last Goshen runner with a faster time was Ali Hochstetler, then a senior, at the 2014 conference meet.

Four other Goshen runners set new personal bests, with three of them doing so for the third race in a row. Senior Megan Graves ended her career on a high note and a low time, knocking more than 41 seconds off her previous low time to take third on the team in 20:07.9.

Junior Jill Steinmetz finished nine-tenths of a second behind Graves, coming in more than 35 seconds faster than the 20:46.41 she ran on October 22 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. And while Megan Graber didn't factor into the team scoring, she crossed the finish line in 23:53.6, more than 28 seconds faster than her last outing.

Freshman Nora Rangel was second on the team and 42nd overall in 19:58.8, marking the first time since at least 2011 that two Maple Leafs finished in less than 20 minutes. Annelise Wiebe rounded out the scoring portion of Goshen's lineup with a 78th-place finish, bettering a record from two races ago by coming across the line in 20:56.2

"With seven of the eight finishers running at conference for the first time, I have to be pleased with a two-spot improvement from a year ago," head coach Rustin Nyce remarked. "We finished the year strong with five new best times and a total of 15 in the final three races. Obviously we'd love to get to the point where eighth is nothing to be proud of but this is a step in that direction."

The conference meet concludes Goshen's 31st season of intercollegiate women's cross country, although track season is just around the corner for a majority of the roster. Goshen's first left-turn-only running event of the season is a partial-squad meet on December 10 at Indiana Tech.
