GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's tennis team came within two games of winning one match and within a tiebreak of leveling another but ultimately dropped a 9-0 decision to Saint Francis on Tuesday afternoon at the Goshen College Tennis Complex.

Kendra Lozano and Chloe Woodward came the closest of any Maple Leafs to winning their match, holding a 5-4 lead before dropping a game for a 5-5 tie at no. 2 doubles. The Goshen duo would rebound to level the match at 6-6 before eventually losing 8-6.

In the singles portion of the match, Joelle Friesen fell behind after a 6-1 first-set deficit before rebounding to send her second stanza to a tiebreak at 6-all. But the return game of Saint Francis' Courtney Witte proved too much for the Maple Leafs' no. 2 player in a 6-1, 7-6(3) defeat.

The win moves Saint Francis into the eighth spot in the Crossroads League women's tennis standings as the Cougars improve to 1-4 in league play. The top eight teams in the league reach the conference tournament, but the regular-season round robin consists of only eight matches rather than nine because Mount Vernon Nazarene does not sponsor tennis. With the loss, Goshen (0-7, 0-5) is a game out of tournament position with three matches left.

The Maple Leafs are off this weekend and will return to the court on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. match at Spring Arbor.

More, including comments from Goshen director of tennis Evan Atkinson, to come when available.
