MARION, Ind. — Freshman Steven Cranston finished 12th in his first collegiate meet, senior Ryan Smith was second overall, and the Goshen College women's team improved their average top-five time by almost two-thirds of a minute as the Maple Leaf men's and women's cross country teams opened their season Friday night at the Indiana Wesleyan Twilight Invitational.

Smith took second to Taylor's Matt Hall after finishing the eight-kilometer (4.97-mile) men's course in 25 minutes, 45.5 seconds. Cranston crossed the finish line 10 positions later in 26:52.8. Goshen's next three runners (Juan Perez, Luke Graber and Daniel Klink) all finished within 9.5 seconds and six spots of each other.

Goshen's top three runners in the women's race were new to the program, as were four of the top five and five of the top seven. Goshen High School graduate Nora Rangel was the lone Leaf under 20 minutes, clocking in at 19:57.2 for the five-kilometer (3.11-mile) race. Rangel finished 26th overall: Chelsea Foster and Jill Steinmetz each came in under 22 minutes and in the top 100.

The top five Maple Leaf women averaged a 21:37 time, down from an average of 22:12 a year ago on the same course. Another former Goshen High School runner, Annelise Wiebe, was GC's fifth finisher.

While the season opener inherently means a number of runners set new career bests (seven of the nine women and six of the 12 men were running their first collegiate cross-country race), two returning Maple Leafs ran their best times as well: Brenner Burkholder was the sixth GC man in 28:59.2 while Kayla Gray was the sixth GC woman in 22:55.1. Both marks replaced times from the 2014 season.

The Maple Leaf men finished fifth in an 11-team field while the women were 11th out of 13. Taylor University, which was not the meet host but was running in its home county, won both events.

Goshen is off for a week before another Friday night meet on Sept. 16, the Indiana Intercollegiates at Bloomington. That event commences at 4:30 p.m.
