GOSHEN, Ind. – Local golf course owner Greg Hire has been tabbed to take over as the Interim Head Coach of the Goshen College golf program, Athletic Director Tim Demant announced on Monday. Hire replaces Allison Bailey who resigned to take a full-time teaching position.
"I am very excited to have someone of Greg's knowledge, experience, and character taking over our golf program," Demant explained. "Greg brings an enthusiasm and love for the game and for people which will benefit our student-athletes. Also, as the owner of a gold course, our players shouldn't have any trouble getting tee times."
Hire has owned and operated Timber Ridge Golf Club - which has served as the practice facility for the Maple Leafs - since 2005. He has further connections with the Goshen program as son Josh Hire was the Leafs' head coach from 2008-2010.
"I am so 'pumped' about this opportunity," Hire said. "I have been interested in the Goshen College golf position for the past several years and if the position every became available again, I knew I would pursue it."
He continued, "I am anxiously looking forward to the recruiting. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love to promote my community and my course and now I get to promote Goshen College also. I believe that we can offer a nice package with an education second to none, a diverse and supportive community and a quality golf course to play. What more could someone ask for in their college experience?"
In addition to the day-to-day operations of his course, Hire has conducted weekly golf clinics and youth summer golf camps. A 1977 Fairfield High School graduate, Hire had a successful career in sales and marketing prior to taking over ownership at Timber Ridge.
Hire has immediately taken over duties of the Maple Leaf program as players arrived this weekend for preseason training. They are slated to open the 2013-14 season at the Calumet College of St. Joseph Invitational at Whitehawk Country Club (Crown Point, Ind.) on August 26-27.
