GOSHEN, Ind. – Head volleyball coach Jim Routhier continues to find success recruiting in Northwestern Ohio, this time adding Hilltop High School (West Unity, Ohio) standout Cierra Carpenter. Carpenter will join the Maple Leafs this fall as one of four players from NW Ohio on Routhier's roster.
"I saw Cierra play two years ago at a camp and was very impressed with her athleticism and coachability," Routhier said. "I have watched her progress into a very good all-around volleyball player with excellent strength and quickness."
That versatility was instrumental in leading Carpenter to a plethora of awards during her high school career. A four-year starter at Hilltop, Carpenter was a three-time All-Buckeye Border Conference and District 7 selection, including earned first team honors in both following her senior season.
The 5-foot-9 lefty ended her career at Hilltop ranked first all-time in digs (711), second in service aces (118), and eighth in kills (316). A team captain as a senior, she pounded down 112 kills with just 42 errors and had 27 service aces.
"I think Cierra can play almost any position on the court," Routhier continued. "Her strong left-handed arm swing makes her a big threat at the net and her quickness and ball handling skills allow her to be a defensive contributor. She also had a great lefty spin serve which will come in handy."
Just as versatile off the volleyball court, Carpenter was also a standout basketball player for Hilltop. A four-year letter winner, she was named Defensive MVP on three occasions, twice picked to the All-BBC team, and received honorable mention All-District 7 as a senior. She also has competed in one year of track, volunteered at the local fire department, and been a mentor for a kindergarten class.
The daughter of Tony and Traci Carpenter, Cierra plans on majoring in Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies. She joins Lexa Magnuson (Elkhart Memorial) and Riley Schultz (Prairie Heights) as members of the 2013 incoming class (read more).
The Maple Leafs are slated to begin the 2013 season at the Concordia University (Mich.) Tournament August 16-17 (full schedule).
