UPLAND, Ind. – Several members of the Goshen College men's track and field team continued their seasons at the Taylor University Invitational on Saturday.
Despite taking just nine competitors, the Maple Leafs won four individual events.
In the 5,000 meters, Goshen went one and two with senior Billy Funk leading the way. He finished in 15:33.87, while sophomore Moses Kaelo took second in 16:04.18.
Four Maple Leafs ran in the 800 meter field, including sophomore Daniel Zelaya who won with a time of 1:58.20. Senior Brock GunderKline was sixth in 2:06.79, while Tijs Buskermolen ran a 2:09.27 and Juan Carlos Diaz clocked in at 2:10.41.
While they were unable to hit the national qualifying standard, both senior Sam Jones and junior Kyle Mishler cleared 6-foot-4 in the high jump to share medalist honors. Also in field events, junior Kyle Lehman won the triple jump (33'7.75") and took fifth in the long jump (19'4.25").
Goshen's race walkers will compete in the Mid-Way Race Walk in Chicago on May 12. The only other event on the books for the Leafs is the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships beginning May 23. Race walkers Jake GunderKline and Mitchell Brickson will join the Leafs' 4x800 relay team (Funk, Zelaya, B. GunderKline, and Lucas Harnish) at the championship event.
