WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Goshen College men's tennis team finished its spring schedule with a 7-2 loss to host Grace College on Wednesday.
"It was a disappointment to not win more than two points, but it was good that we were able to get this match in against a formidable opponent," head coach Stan King said. "Though conditions were very windy, but at least we were not prevented from finishing this match, after which rain came down in buckets."
He continued, "Our short spring season is now finished. I am pleased with the effort our guys have put into practice and the good spirit evident among players on the team. We have a good contingent of returning players going into the fall of 2013."
Wednesday match started with some struggles in the doubles match ups for the Maple Leafs. They fell behind 3-0 in the team scoring when they took just seven total games in the three pairings. Grace also dominated three of the singles matches, winning at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 positions, while dropping a total of just five games.
The No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 singles matches were battles, though. In the No. 3 spot, freshman Vasanthkumar Palanisamy outlasted Aaron Blevins 7-6 (8-6) and 7-5. Meanwhile, Krishnan Ganesan held off five set points in the first set and eventually won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 singles
"Vasanth played his best singles of his brief Maple Leaf career," King explained. "In the first set, he managed to come back from being down 1-4 in the tiebreaker (first set) to win it 8-6. He has been looking good in spring practices and it was satisfying to see him extend that stellar play against a formidable opponent."
At No. 1 singles, freshman Balazs Pirot dropped a heartbreaker to senior Michael Blevins in three sets. Tied 3-3 in the third-set super tiebreaker, Blevins took five straight and held on 10-6.
The Maple Leafs finish the year at 6-8 overall.
