GOSHEN, Ind. – A second-half downpour and a lightning delay were not enough to ruin Senior Night for the Goshen College women's soccer team, which defeating visiting Marian University 3-1 Wednesday.
The Maple Leafs honored their 11 seniors in style, winning their first Crossroads League contest of the season, while snapping a winless streak at 10 matches.
And could it be more fitting on Senior Night that the star would indeed be a senior. Kristina Lopienski stole the show Wednesday night, scoring twice doubling her career goal tally.
The Bartlett (Ill.) native netted her first just over 18 minutes in when classmate Marina do Valle sent a ball across the defense with Lopienski finishing it for the 1-0 lead. The goal ended a nearly 300-minute goalless drought for the Leafs, who had last scored on an early Emily Fretz strike against Bethel College three matches ago.
Fifteen minutes after the Lopienski goal, freshman Katelyn Vendrely added on with her team-leading eight goal of the season. She latched on to a lofting ball from Mary Person and volleyed Goshen to a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute.
After honoring seniors Lopienski, do Valle, Bianca Brambilla, Mara Swartzentruber, Julia Miller, Kahrya Ramirez, Rachel Stoltzfus, Kelsey Schrock, Sara Soto, Sonia Navarro, and Lynn Weaver at halftime, the rain steadily increased throughout the second half.
It didn't stop Lopienski or the Maple Leafs, though. Lopienski secured her brace in the 65th minute beating the keeper to the ball and firing to the back of the net for a 3-0 Goshen lead.
Marian was able to end the shutout in the 83rd minute when Savanna Patterson scored off a Sharisse Yoder corner kick. Just minutes later, the teams were called off the pitch due to lightning. Delayed for about 30 minutes, the game was finally called with 4:41 still on the clock with no end to the rain and lightning in sight.
Both teams fired nine shots on frame, with the Leafs having a slim 15-13 lead overall on shots. Weaver made eight saves in the net for Goshen, while Julia Naab had six for the visitors.
Goshen (5-11, 1-6 CL) will travel to #10 Spring Arbor University for a 7:00 p.m. kick off on Saturday.
