VALPARAISO, Ind. – A total of six teams, including three NCAA DI programs, competed alongside the Goshen College men's tennis team at the Valpo Fall Tennis Invitational over the weekend.

Host Valparaiso University (VU) joined Western Illinois University (WIU), Chicago State University (CSU), Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) and Roosevelt University (RU) in the two-day event.  A total of three singles brackets (16 entires each) and three doubles brackets (eight entires each) played a full compass draw with every spot being played out so each entry totaled four singles and three doubles matches.

"This was a well-organized tournament that gave our guys some good competition and lots of it," head coach Stan King said.  "And the guys were able to watch some good matches while waiting for their next opponent.  The primary negative for Goshen was injury - Csaba Laszlo and Balazs Pirot were last-minute cancellations from the tourney due to illness and due to a wrist injury, Vasanthkumar Palanisamy played with some pain before withdrawing."

Highlights, though, included the play of freshman Jon Kaasa and junior Krishnan Ganesan.  Kaasa dropped his opening match of the tournament 6-4, 6-2 to Valparaiso's No. 1 Eric Hornet, but finished 2-2 in the top singles bracket.  Ganesan had a similar fate, running off a 2-2 mark, including a comeback win in his third match.

"Jon played some fantastic point before losing to the eventual tournament champion (Hornet)," King added.  "Krishnan had a very nice comeback win over ONU's Addison Newell 3-6, 6-2, 10-3 before taking a three-setter from RU's Matt Kuntzi."

The Maple Leafs now hope that everyone gets healthy in just a couple short days.  The Crossroads League Tournament begins on Tuesday.  As the No. 6 seed, Goshen (5-6, 3-5 CL) will travel to third-seeded Marian University.
