ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - With 32 teams and nearly 400 runners on hand, the Goshen College women's cross country team placed 20th at the Brissman Lundeen Cross Country Invitational on Friday.
Hosted by Augustana College, the event held at Saukie Golf Course featured one of the most elite fields in the Midwest with NCAA DII, DII, and NAIA programs on hand. The Maple Leafs finished with 589 points, good for 20th place.
"The women ran well at the 6k distance," said head coach Doug Yoder. "They were closely packed together and are improving with each race. (Cynthia) Medina and (Ali) Hochstetler ran solid races for such a large race."
Freshman Cynthia Medina was the first Goshen runner to cross the line, finishing the course in 25:10.9, while sophomore Ali Hochstetler was just two-tenths of a second behind in 25:11.1. Another underclassman was third for Goshen, Irene Schmid, in 25:41.5, while upperclassmen Audrey Thill, Karla Folker, Alli Beitler, and Alita Yoder rounded out the top seven.
The top three for the Leafs were separated by just 33 seconds, the top five by only 46 seconds, and the top seven completed the 6k within one minute, 10 seconds of each other.
The pack looks to continue its improvement when they travel to the Benedictine Eagle Invitational in Warrenville (Ill.) on October 5.
