GOSHEN, Ind.- On the Goshen College tennis courts Tuesday night, the men's tennis team hosted conference rival, the Spring Arbor University Cougars. The Maple Leafs were able to battle through most of the match, but struggled to finish, falling to the Cougars 7-2.
Head Coach Stan King spoke of the match up saying that, "Spring Arbor played very aggressively, poaching and hitting sharp volleys. In singles, Spring Arbor is especially strong in the top three singles spots, with veteran seniors at each position."
Csaba Laszlo and Balazs Pirot's doubles match up (No. 1) was pretty close in the beginning (held a 4-3 lead), but like most of the other matches on the afternoon, the middle proved to be the breaking point with the visitors winning the final four games of the match. Spring Arbor was able to control most of the doubles matches because of the double faults made by the Goshen players as well as their own aggressive serves.
In singles is where the Maple Leafs picked up their two victories, both in tight super tiebreakers. Krishnan Ganesan recovered from a 6-1 loss in the second set to win 10-8, while Thiago Amaral outlasted Michael Darling 11-9.
"I was pleased with the way Krishnan set up his points and showed patience in waiting for good opportunities to win points. Thiago Amaral's match at #5 had some very long rallies before Thiago prevailed and won by a 7-6(4), 4-6, 11-9 score," said King of his two successful matches on the night.
The Goshen men's tennis team now stands at 2-3 overall and 2-3 in Crossroads League play. Their next match will be the ITA Mid-West Regionals held in Grand Rapids, MI on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
