GOSHEN, Ind. – A pair of Goshen College senior student-athlete shared Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week honors after also being selected as Crossroads League Players of the Week for action between September 3-9.
Billy Funk (Gallup, N.M.) was named the league's Cross Country Runner of the Week, while Lynn Weaver (Goshen, Ind.) was picked as Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. In addition, the pair are the first co-winners of the Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week in the awards second week of the 2012-13 season.
Funk won his first career individual title at the Grace College Invitational on Saturday. His winning time of 26:42 was one second in front of teammate Daniel Zelaya helping the Maple Leafs also earn the team title.
Weaver was in the net for three Goshen women's soccer wins on the week. She logged a total of 256 scoreless minutes in net (of the Leafs' 270 total), officially getting credit for two shutouts. While not tested often - three saves total - Weaver did make some history, earning her 10th career clean sheet to tie her for fourth all-time at Goshen.
The Maple Leaf Athlete of the week is sponsored by Springer Design, Inc. and is chosen each Monday by a committee of Goshen College personnel. The Crossroads League Player of the Week honors are selected by the league office after submissions from each of the 10 member institutions.
