GOSHEN, Ind. – A tough start to the 2012 season continued as the Goshen College women's tennis faced off against visiting Marian University Friday evening. One of the best teams in the Crossroads League, the Knights cruised past the Maple Leafs 9-0.
"Marian is one of the top two teams we will play this year," fourth-year head coach Doug Gossman said. "The girls will continue to fight and compete."
For the second-straight time to start the year, the best match for the Leafs was at No. 1 singles. "Anika did a great job," Gossman added. "She lost the first set 6-1, then came out and took a 3-0 lead in the second set. It was a close match throughout, but she came up short."
In doubles, seniors Lauren Stoltzfus and Rebekah Steiner had the best showing, winning two of the last three games in an 8-2 loss.
The Maple Leafs (0-2, 0-2 CL) return to the courts on Tuesday when they host the University of Saint Francis.
