OVERVIEW:

INEXPERIENCED LINEUP - Entering the season, head coach Doug Gossman had just two returners with significant varsity experience (Lauren Stoltzfus and Summer Hasan), while the latter was coming off a one-year hiatus.

ROUGH START - Due to the inexperience, the Maple Leafs got off to a rough start, dropping their first seven matches of the season.

IMPROVEMENT - Gossman's main goal was improvement, development, and mental toughness.  "We want them to be a lot better at the end of the season than the beginning."  The Maple Leafs finished the year, winning two of their final five matches.

HIGHLIGHTS:

CAREER STARTED (9/2AND 9/3) - Freshman Anika Baumgartner jumped straight into the No. 1 singles spot for the Maple Leafs and got off to a 2-1 start.  Her first career victory came against Manchester College in gutsy come-from-behind fashion (http://www.goleafs.net/article/893.php) before backing it up with her first MCC win a day later.  Read More 

BOTTOM HALF STRONG IN LOSS (9/7) - The Maple Leafs got singles wins from No. 4-6 singles (Lauren Stoltzfus, Maddie Ruth, Corine Alvarez), but could not get past the Foresters, losing 6-3.  Read More   

DOUBLE BREAKTHROUGH (9/21) - After getting swept in doubles play in their first six outings, Goshen got its first doubles victory of the season when Corine Alvarez teamed with Lauren Stoltzfus for an 8-5 victory at the No.3 spot against Grace College.  Read More   

FIRST WIN (9/23) - The Maple Leafs dropped just one set and swept singles play to earn their first win of the season, 8-1 over visiting Cornerstone University.  Read More   

ANOTHER SINGLES SWEEP (9/27) - In their home finale, the Maple Leafs swept singles play for the second-straight home match, taking down Defiance College 9-0.  They lost a total of just 16 games in 12 sets.  Read More   

BY THE NUMBERS:

DOUBLES CONSISTENCY - The Maple Leafs played just six different doubles pairings on the year, including the same No. 1 partnership in all 12 matches.  All eight of their doubles victories came when they had the most used doubles pairings (Baumgartner-Hasan, Goodman-Stoltzfus, and Alvarez-Weaver).

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Freshman Anika Baumgartner had the most wins on the team (eight) despite playing in the toughest spots (No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles).  She was just two wins shy of reaching the program's all-time top 10 seasons in wins at the top singles spot.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETES - The Maple Leafs four NAIA Scholar-Athletes was the second most in a single season in program history.  The 2010 team racked up five scholar athletes.

ALL-TIME - Goshen is now 207-198 all time for a winning percentage of .511.  The program started in 1972 with a 4-0 mark under inaugural head coach Ruth Gunden.
