NEW ERA - Fabio dos Santos became the sixth head coach in the 20-year history of the program late last spring. "The goal is to create a comprehensive mentality within the program that is devoted to continually developing as a student-athlete," dos Santos explained. "We strongly believe this mentality will lead to consistent winning on the field and will also provide the confidence to attack the post-graduate world in the same manner."
IMPROVED OFFENSE - Goshen scored a total of 26 goals in 2011, but more importantly they had eight in MCC play. In the three previous MCC campaigns combined, they had netted just seven. They also had seven players with multiple tallies on the score sheet.
TIGHT MCC BATTLES - In three of the Maple Leafs first four MCC contests, they lost by a single score. In the other, they had an early lead showing they could be competitive with any team in the conference.
HIGHLIGHTS:
OFFENSE EXPLODES IN OPENER (8/26) - The Maple Leafs scored five times in the first half and seven times total to open with a 7-1 victory at Andrews University. Freshman Sara Watts scored twice in the opening half, while sophomore Dana Christner had a goal and an assist. Read More
OT WIN MAKES IT 2 IN A ROW (8/30) - It took overtime, but Goshen got off to its first 2-0 start since 1997 with a 3-2 win at Holy Cross College in comeback fashion. Sophomore Emily Fretz tied the game in the 82nd minute and then Watts finished it off just four minutes into overtime. Read More
SHUTOUT LIFTS LEAFS (9/14) - After dropping two in a row to fall to .500, junior Lynn Weaver made eight saves and a 30th minute strike by junior Marina do Valle was the difference in a 1-0 shutout of Manchester College. Read More
GOAL FLURY (9/17) - More than 2/3 of a home tilt with Calumet College of St. Joseph was scoreless. Then, everything broke loose. Within eight minutes, Fretz (2) and do Valle combined for three goals for a big lead, which the Maple Leafs were forced to hold onto after the Crimson Wave answered with two late tallies in a 3-2 Goshen win. HU WINS INDOOR BATTLE (9/28) - Playing indoors due to rain and field conditions for their Mid-Central College Conference opener, the Maple Leafs battled 7-2-1 Huntington to a 1-0 decision. Read More
SHORT END OF OVERTIME (10/1) - The Maple Leafs led on two different occassions, but were forced into overtime against Taylor in what dos Santos called "one of the best games we have played all season." However, with five minutes left in the second overtime, the Trojans struck for the game-winner from long range. Read More
MCC WIN COLUMN (10/17) - A dominating 3-1 victory over Saint Francis gave Goshen its first MCC win of the season and first since 2007. It was also just their second win over the Cougars (2-14-2) in program history. Read More
BY THE NUMBERS:
MCC DROUGHT OVER - Goshen's 3-1 win against Saint Francis on Oct. 17 was its first Mid-Central College Conference victory since the 2007 season. The Maple Leafs had gone 0-30-3 since a 2-0 victory at Bethel on October 5 that season.
SAVING THE DAY - Junior goalkeeper Lynn Weaver ranked 10th in the country with 148 saves. Added to her first two seasons in the net, Weaver now ranks fifth in program history with 313.
ALL-TIME - The Maple Leafs are now 120-232-17 all-time for a winning percentage of .348.
