GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The season officially came to a close for the Goshen College softball team as they were swept 5-3, 9-0 by host Calvin College on Tuesday.
Despite the defeats, the Maple Leafs still tied for the most wins (14) since the 2003 team won 18 games.
In game one of the non-conference affair, Goshen could not solve Knight starter Lina Avila. She allowed just four hits and struck out three in the complete-game victory. Junior Maria Koshmider also had a strong outing for Goshen, allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
All three of the Leafs runs came in the fifth inning when they benefitted from three Calvin errors. The only hit in the inning was a two-run double by freshman Savanah Brinegar. Avila also led the Knight offense with a 2-for-3 game, including a two-run home run.
In the nightcap and season finale, the Maple Leafs struggled defensively and at the plate. They committed four errors, leading to seven unearned runs, while tallying just three hits in the run-rule shortened 9-0 loss.
Avila hit another homer, a three-run shot, while Marie Prins and Christie VanderMeer each had two hits for the Knights.
The Maple Leafs close the 2012 season at 14-29 overall. They went 4-14 in the Mid-Central College Conference missing the postseason tournament by one game.
