GOSHEN, Ind. – The Goshen College women's basketball team hung with the #11-ranked team in the nation for 17 minutes, but they could not keep up the pace, losing 75-40 to visiting Bethel College Tuesday night.
The Maple Leafs quickly jumped to a 4-0 lead on baskets by Kaylee Hilliker and Sierria Burlage. The Pilots immediately responded with a 9-0 run, but Goshen responded with their largest spurt of the evening.
Hilliker drained a long 3-pointer sparking what eventually turned into a 12-0 spurt. Four different Leafs scored during the span, including four by Burlage. With eight minutes remaining in the opening stanza, Goshen stretched its lead to a game-high eight (20-12) on a pair of Jaime Stack free throws.
The visitors again had an immediate response and within two minutes had the score tied again at 20-20. Another first-half run by the Leafs (6-0) put them up by as many with less than three minutes left in the period. The Maple Leafs shot a sparkling 48% in the half, but the Pilots closed the period on a 15-1 run to take a 35-27 lead into the break.
The Pilots never looked back. They started the second half on a 18-1 spurt and continued to pull away the rest of the night.
Freshman Sierria Burlage hit 7-of-11 from the field for a career high 19 points, while also grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Senior Kaylee Hilliker added eight points for a short-handed Goshen squad missing two starters to injury.
Twelve different Pilots got on the scoresheet led by Laura Johnson's 17. Chrissy Hooks added 12 off the bench for Bethel, who grabbed 20 offensive rebounds.
The Maple Leafs (3-20, 0-11 MCC) return to the floor on Saturday when they host the University of Saint Francis.
