GOSHEN, Ind. – Junior Matthew Martin (Doncaster, England) earned his first and the men's basketball team's third Springer Design Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week, the Goshen College Athletics Department announced Monday. Martin's honor comes for action between January 15-23.
The six-foot-six forward hit 5-of-9 from the field an 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the Maple Leafs' 77-62 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Tuesday. His 14 points tied him for the team lead in the game, Goshen's first against MVNU since they joined the Mid-Central College Conference.
Martin followed up Tuesday's performance by hitting 3-of-6 3-pointers for 12 points in a tough road loss at Taylor University on Saturday. He currently leads the Maple Leafs with 13.8 points per game.
The Maple Leaf Athlete of the week is sponsored by Springer Design, Inc. and is chosen each Monday by a committee of Goshen College personnel.
