GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen College Athletic Director Tim Demant announced a transition in the baseball coaching staff with Alex Childers taking over the head job from Eric Screeton who announced his resignation on Thursday.

An assistant coach for the Maple Leafs the last two seasons, Childers becomes the 11th head coach in the 55-year history of the program.

"We are excited that Alex has accepted our invitation to lead the baseball program," Demant said.  "As an assistant, he has shown tremendous leadership and has the support of the players."

"He brings a knowledge of the game, great work ethic and care for his student-athletes," Demant continued.  "We look forward to seeing the program continue to grow under Alex's leadership."

Prior to his current coaching tenure at Goshen, Childers spent two years as an assistant at his alma mater, New Haven High School, helping the Bulldogs to a semi-state appearance.  He has worked as an instructor with Swing Kings LLC, The World Baseball Academy and The Bill Jones league as well as various coaching assignments with The Eric Wedge Camps, Notre Dame Baseball Camps, collegiate summer leagues and various other youth leagues.

Childers played collegiately at both Goshen College and Olivet Nazarene University (Bourbonnais, Ill.).  In 2007 he received a bachelor's in Business Management from ONU, where he also played volleyball.

In two seasons at the helm of the Maple Leafs, Screeton coached five NAIA Scholar-Athletes.  He resigned to take a teaching and coaching position at Wawasee High School.  

"We are grateful for the time and energy Eric has given to the program these past two years and we feel that he is leaving a great foundation that will produce even better results in the future," Demant said.  "We wish him the best as he transitions in his professional career."
